This Life Brought to You by Blood Donors

Melodie Henderson

After collapsing at home, I was hospitalized with sudden hemolytic anemia. I have had 23 units of blood transfused in the last 11 months. I never needed blood before that time and have been a blood donor on and off through the years. My blood has two unknown antibodies, so it must be mixed.

I have learned so much about blood this past year and am so grateful for the people who have donated to keep me living. I take prednisone when my hemoglobin crashes, with instructions to taper off each time. I have also had IV and oral chemotherapy, both were ineffective. Since no cause has been identified for my Hemolytic Anemia, and my bone marrow is normal, I am transfusion dependent to live at this time and have been since last February.
