Jean's Story: From Blood Donor to Dream Vacation Go-er

When you give blood, you save lives. Sometimes, though, you also win an all-expenses-paid trip somewhere wonderful.

Little Rock, Arkansas resident Jean Milner is a longtime OBI blood donor — she recalls first donating with us more than 30 years ago — so when she arrived at her local donation center in the spring of 2021, she didn't expect to experience anything out of the ordinary.

She certainly didn't expect to win an all-expenses-paid trip.

Milner did win a trip, though, courtesy of Our Blood Institute partner Dream Vacations.

And while she says "it felt great" to be awarded such a prize, she recalls feeling a little trepidation about where — and when — to go. Given that she won the trip only a few months after the first Covid vaccines were introduced, Milner, a retired nurse, hoped to wait until travel safety improved.

Fast forward to the fall of 2024, and Milner still hadn't been able to take advantage of her winning raffle ticket. She'd asked longtime neighbor and friend Jeanie Truesdell to join her, though she still didn't know quite where they'd be going. It wasn't until speaking with Dream Vacations franchise owner Dave Proudfit that they settled on a destination: Seattle, Washington.

But Proudfit, realizing neither woman had been to Seattle, did far more than recommend a visit to the Pacific Northwest: he offered to personally escort Milner and Truesdell on their weeklong sojourn in Seattle.

"Originally I was just going to fly them to Seattle and pay for Uber rides, things like that," said Proudfit, who lived in the area through much of the 1990s. "I determined it was almost impossible for them to see everything in Seattle that way."

And with that, plans were set for that October. "We were just so excited," Truesdell remembers.

    Oh, the Places They Went!

Talk to any one of Proudfit, Milner and Truesdell about the trip and they'll tell you they had an amazing time.

With Proudfit acting as tour guide, the trio did it all: they walked through the city's famous Pike Place Market, saw the Space Needle, enjoyed the beach, a local wine tasting and a beautiful seafood dinner on the waterfront. They drove around Mount Rainier — which Proudfit says was "out in all its glory" on a perfectly sunny day — strolled through Seattle's aquarium and an urban garden and glass museum, and even found time to stop at a famous downtown burger joint.

"They were great to travel with," Proudfit said. "I had as much fun as they did!"

"Dave was a very nice travel companion and did a wonderful job with the arrangements," Truesdell recalls.

"It was wonderful," Milner said. "It was just a great experience. I'm so grateful for blood donation!"

The Reason Behind This Dream Vacation

The beauty of a story like this? People showed up for each other. Truesdell chose to travel with her decades-old friend. Milner said she didn't donate blood for the chance at winning a trip, she did it "just to help people."

"I used to be a nurse. I know how badly blood is needed," she said of her motivations. "Plus who knows, I might need blood some day."

Proudfit went above and beyond his partnership with us to make sure two strangers had a lovely vacation. To him, going with them was just the right thing to do.

"I've worked with OBI for 10 or 15 years and it's been a really good relationship," Proudfit said. "Ninety-five percent of OBI donors don't need an incentive, they just do it because they want to. What we do is try to help get that extra 5% to boost the blood supply."

From all of us at OBI, thanks Dave for your help with that 5%, and for showing Jean and Jeanie a wonderful time on what sure seems like a dream vacation. Ready to pay it forward like these three? Come in and see us!
