How generous donors helped a 5-year-old fight childhood cancer

Millie Bontempo is full of joy, personality and incredible strength. Her story has touched everyone who’s met her, and it perfectly reflects why blood donation matters so much for families across our region.

A Miracle From the Beginning

Millie’s story began long before her diagnosis. Born in 2020, she was her family’s miracle IVF baby. Her parents cherished every moment of those early days, never imagining how quickly life would change.

Soon after her birth, a routine blood draw raised concerns. Millie’s family was told to go to the emergency room immediately. What followed was a blur of fear, testing and uncertainty.

A Life-Changing Diagnosis

Three years later, doctors confirmed what no parent wants to hear: Millie had B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia, a form of childhood cancer. A bone marrow biopsy revealed leukemia cells, and her family began a long, difficult journey filled with treatments, hospital stays and emotional highs and lows.

The Critical Role of Blood Donors

Throughout her treatment, Millie often became critically low on red blood cells, hemoglobin and platelets. She needed blood products again and again to stay safe and strong enough to continue fighting her cancer.

Her mom describes those transfusions as lifesaving. “Blood products allowed us to be able to let her live her life,” she said. And they didn’t just help her survive — they helped her stay a kid.

Because of donors, Millie was able to go back to school. She played soccer. She danced. She had playdates with friends. She enjoyed the simple things that bring children joy, even in the middle of overwhelming challenges.

Hope for the Future

"Without the hard work of OBI [donors] and everyone that does their part there, Amelia wouldn't be here," said Adrianne Bontempo, Millie's mom.

Millie’s family has carried so much throughout her cancer journey, but they continue to look ahead with hope. Her mom shared that thinking about a life moving forward for Millie is all she has ever wanted.

Today, that hope is possible because of people who give blood. Every donor plays a part in a child’s tomorrow, and Millie’s story is a reminder of what those donations truly mean.
