A New Way to Recognize the Donors Patients Count On
Earlier this month, we introduced a new Donor Recognition program designed to celebrate something patients rely on every day: donors who show up consistently over time.
For many patients - especially those needing ongoing treatments - blood isn’t a one-time need. It’s something they depend on again and again. This program was built to reflect that reality by recognizing the milestones that come from returning, staying committed, and continuing to give.
Each milestone in a donor’s annual donation journey now includes a rewards store points drop, helping donors move closer to their next redemption while reinforcing the impact of consistency.
We’ve also updated how points are earned so they better reflect the actions that matter most: donating the most-needed products and coming back throughout the year. Some one-time actions - like booking an appointment in advance or making a single whole blood donation - may no longer earn points in the same way they once did. Instead, the focus is on the donors who make giving a habit and donate with their blood type in mind. Donors can see which donations are most-needed (and bring the most reward points!) by visiting their Blood Type page on our website.
Missed appointments are another important part of this shift as well. Right now, 2 out of every 5 donation appointments are missed without notice. When that happens, it leaves gaps we can’t always fill - and patients feel the impact. To help compensate for the disruption to the blood supply, no-shows now result in a one-time 5,000-point deduction.
At the same time, flexibility remains. Walk-ins are always welcome and may be a better option for donors with unpredictable schedules. Donors are encouraged to reschedule or cancel if plans change - even the day of an appointment. Even a little notice can allow another donor to step in.
Consistency is what enables us to plan ahead, support hospitals with confidence, and make sure blood products are available when they’re needed most - not just today, but every day.
To keep the program sustainable and meaningful, reward balances are now capped at 40,000 points. Once a donor redeems and their balance drops below the cap, they can continue earning points as usual. Donors with reward balances over 40,000 will not see a reduction in points; however, they will not continue to earn points until they fall below that cap.
We’re excited to continue recognizing our most committed donors - the kind patients can count on. The ones who come back, who stay committed, and who make a lasting difference over time. Thank you for your support!
