How blood donors helped Connor beat childhood leukemia
Connor Lloyd was just three years old when his family’s world changed overnight. Today, he is a healthy, active kid who loves basketball, but his journey is a powerful reminder of how blood donors help children survive serious illnesses.
Connor’s story shows how something as simple as donating blood can mean everything to families facing the unexpected.
A Normal Childhood Interrupted
In November 2017, Connor celebrated his third birthday at a bounce house surrounded by family and friends. Just a few weeks later, he developed a fever and wasn’t feeling well. What seemed like a routine illness quickly became something much more serious.
Connor’s grandmother took him to the doctor. The doctor noticed concerning signs and warned the family that Connor could have leukemia. Within 45 minutes of having his blood drawn at the hospital, the diagnosis was confirmed.
Blood Transfusions Gave Connor Strength
Connor began treatment for acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) right away, and blood transfusions quickly became an important part of his care. Before transfusions,he was weak, but afterward his family could see the difference.
“He would be really weak, and then it was like he would get his blood transfusion, his platelets, and he would just, like, come back to life," said Leah Lloyd, Connor's mom.
